Bacchus Cafe Geel is one of those small rock & roll pubs with a tiny stage in the back and a pleasant atmosphere. Juiceman (Peter Claes) is the owner of the place. Each first Thursday of the month he has a good rockabilly/hillbilly/blues band in his bar. Al and the Black Cats are almost the homeband, the crowd loves them. But tonight, we had The Black Crabs on stage, all the way from Seattle. And damn they were good.

They used to play as a backing band for the Rockabilly legend Wanda Jackson. The success of touring with Wanda kept the band alive. Their sound? Good rockabilly with some danceable beats and quickly-turns. The tempo is very nice, the songs are full with variation and sometimes they add some Garage, Surf, or Western Swing.

KIRSTEN BALLWEG

She is the backbone of the sound with her hard-edged slap. she played with the legendary band The Donettes. A woman on the bass, lovely. We got a small interview with her later in this article. The other members are Jonathan Stuart who was reponsible for the guitar and some vocals, Tom Forster does the drums and also some backing vocal.

The band played very calm and self-confident. They already played at the Ace Cafe in Rumst, perhaps they know the Belgium crowd after one gig. The setlist was divided in 2 parts. The first part was good rockabilly stuff with some cool songs like Blast Off!, the theme song of their first CD, released in 2005 at the Shake the Shack Rockabilly Ball. "Pickup Line" was also a nice song.

The secon dpart was with more variety. A little bit more tempo, surf and some nice beats. The crowd wanted more and guess what, Al and the Black Cats showed up and played 2 songs. Dance or die you almost could say. After the gig I went to Kirsten, she was really impressing. Some questions, Kirsten?

Why did you come to Belgium? Seattle is bigger...
"We heard that Roots/Rockabilly was really great in Belgium. First we booked a gig at the Summer Jamboree in Italy, and afterwards we came here in Belgium.

I saw that you love La Chouffe. What's your favourite beer?
"Oh, my beer taste isn't that sophisticated. When I'm in Seattle I usually drink cheap beer like Pabst, Budweiser. But here I've had some great beers like La Chouffe and Stella Artois. But the alcohol rate is much higher than the beers back home. I have to be carefull when I drink here - who knows what could happen!

First time in the Bacchus Cafe. Good gig, good bartender?
"Oh yeah, Peter (Juiceman) was awesome. He treated us even to a delicious dinner next door. In the States we don't get lunch very often. I would love to play here agai and see all my Belgian friends again.

What about the future? A new blast off CD?
"If we can come back to Belgium or the Netherlands, I won't doubt. When we get home, we will finishing our next CD."
